82 & 12 W 12 St
From October to November 1914, J.C.Powys lived at 82 West 12th Street with his sister Marian.
It suits me to be near Sixth Avenue and we know all the shops about here. Do you remember Bigelow's the drug store, just opposite Jefferson Market Prison? We've been there together I expect ere now. (Letters to His Brother Llewelyn, 22 October 1914)
They soon found a better place not far, at 12 West 12th Street, where they will stay until 1919.
John confided to Llewelyn : "The dignity of the house, the distinction of its position, its 'location', and the churchyard outside and the church, and the big French windows, still continue to delight us both." (Letters to His Brother Llewelyn, 8 December 1914)
"It reminds me very much of the New Court at Corpus," observed Mr. Powys, indicating the wide green quadrangle and the ivy-covered red brick church which his third-story window overlooked. (New York Evening Post 28 October 1920)
