University Lecturers Association of New York (ULANY)

ULANY was the rival organisation to the Philadelphia-based ASEUT. It was set up in the winter of 1910 by Louis Wilkinson, already well-known in America as a lecturer, after he had an argument about his fees with Charles Atkins, from the ASEUT. Wilkinson asked G.Arnold Shaw, (whom John Cowper had met on his first voyage to the States, in 1904-05) to arrange his lectures for him. It was first based at 11 Charles Street in New York. In 1915 the headquarters were moved to 1735 Grand Central Terminal. It was soon a great success, and Arnold Shaw was to prove very important in JCP's life, as manager and publisher, until 1920.
